Best type of cake is, of course, a traditional fruit cake. First, cut off one third of a 20cm (8") round cake. Stand remaining two thirds on its end on a baseboard. Shape fireplace opening by scooping out cake. Cover first with almond flavoured paste, then white icing remembering to smooth around and in fireplace opening. Use leftover icing to form fireplace arch. Stick with sugar syrup. Mark out brickwork using a knife. Brush all over with red and brown food colouring mixed together. Decorate accordingly.
